All About Fredericton

Fredericton is the capital of New Brunswick. The city is situated in the west-central portion of the province, and along with Moncton and Saint John, is one of the main urban centres in southern New Brunswick.

The majestic St. John River bisects the city and provides a dominant natural feature for the municipality.

The population of the city centre of Fredericton is 63,116 (2021 Census) and the Greater Fredericton Region’s population is 105,688.

Fredericton is located inland from the Atlantic Ocean and as a result, it has higher summer temperatures and lower winter temperatures than New Brunswick coastal locations such as Saint John and Moncton.

Fredericton has a semi-continental climate with a warm summer and a cold winter. Snow depths of 1+ cm are seen approximately 105 days each year.

Education

Organization of the School System

Serving Canada’s only officially bilingual province, New Brunswick’s education system offers students the opportunity to learn in both French and English through two parallel but separate education systems: Francophone sector and the Anglophone sector. Each linguistic sector of the Department of Education is responsible for its own curriculum and assessment.

The public education system in New Brunswick consists of 7 school districts - three francophone (French) and four anglophone (English) that govern public schools from kindergarten to Grade 12 (K-12).

Education from kindergarten to Grade 12 is free for all residents of New Brunswick. Schooling is mandatory for children from ages 5 (as of December 31) to 18 or until graduation (up to a maximum age of 21).

Details on the New Brunswick Curriculum can be viewed online here.
