All About Saint John

Rising from banks of the St. John River and Saint John Harbour, and built on top of some of the oldest geology in the world, Saint John, the first incorporated city in Canada (1785), is the largest city on the Bay of Fundy and the industrial backbone of New Brunswick.

The City proper has a population of over 69,895 (2021 Census) and the Saint John metro region’s population is 126,202.

Climate

The climate of Saint John is humid continental. The Bay of Fundy never fully freezes, thus moderating the winter temperatures compared with inland locations. Even so, with the prevailing wind blowing from the west (from land to sea), the average January temperature is about −8.2 °C (17.2 °F). Summers are cool to moderately warm, and daytime temperatures usually do not exceed 25 °C (77 °F). Saint John experiences a considerable amount of fog during the summer months, though the fog usually does not last throughout the entire day.

Up to date weather can be found online by visiting Environment Canada.

Transportation

The Saint John Transit Commission was established in 1979 to provide scheduled transit service to the city. It is the largest public transit system in New Brunswick in terms of both mileage and passengers. Ridership on Saint John Transit's system is about 2.5 million passengers per year and growing. Website

Saint John Airport is located 15 km northeast of the central business district of the city. Website

Saint John Council consists of a Mayor and ten Councillors. Two councillors represent the city at large and the other 8 represent the city’s 4 wards (2 per ward).  Council is voted in every four years.
