All About Timmins

The City of Timmins is located in Northeastern Ontario and is located on the Mattagmi River. 

  

Geographically Timmins is one of the largest cities in Canada - 3,210 km² but maintains a small town atmosphere. 

  

Timmins has a population of 41,145 (2021 census). It has a large Francophone community with more than 50% bilingual in English and French. 

  

The gold rush of 1909 earned Timmins the nickname of "the City with the Heart of Gold". Mining continues to make up the majority of the city's economic base and mining tours are a main attraction. Country superstar Shania Twain spent her childhood in Timmins.

The Timmins Victor M. Power Airport services the City of Timmins. The airport provides daily service to Toronto (both Pearson and Billy Bishop Island Airport), and several other destinations in Northern Ontario.


Government

The governing body of the City of Timmins is City Council. It consists of the Mayor and councillors from each of the City’s five wards. Members of Council are elected by residents to a four-year term of office.

Lakehead District School Board

Lakehead District School Board is the largest school board in the city with 22 elementary schools and 4 secondary schools. 


Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board

Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board is the second largest school board with 16 elementary, 3 middle schools and 2 high schools

 Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales

Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales is the French Catholic school board with 1 elementary and 1 high school in Thunder Bay. 

  

Private Schools

Application procedures for private schools differ from school to school.  An entrance test and interview with the child are generally required.  There is not always availability at your private school of choice and your child’s name may be placed on a waiting list for entrance during the school year or subsequent years.  It is a good idea to source out private schools well in advance as their registration takes place in (approximately) December of the prior year and January and February of the same school year.

The Holliger Golf Club was established in 1922 in an effort to encourage employees to the Hollinger Mine in Timmins.  80 years later, the Hollinger Golf Club has expanded from its original 9-hole facility to include a championship 18-hole facility.
