Facts about Oakville
- In 1827 Colonel William Chisholm purchased the land at the mouth of Sixteen Mile Creek. Colonel William Chisholm fought in the war of 1812 and was elected to Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada.
- The Village of Oakville was named in 1838
- Oakville is home to a number of regional and national head offices, including Ford Canada, Tim Hortons, Siemens Canada and the Weather Network.
- Oakville has chosen to remain as a town even though the population would classify it as a city.
- Oakville boasts over 2400 acres of parkland.
- Oakville has three distinct business areas: Bronte Village, Downtown Oakville and Kerr Village.
- With historical highlights that include shipbuilding, immigration and the Underground Railroad, Oakville’s distinct heritage is on display at the town’s many heritage buildings and trails.
- The lake shore played an important role in Oakville's Black History, as the entry point for many American slaves travelling the Underground Railroad in search of freedom.
