All About Sarnia
Covering a 165 square-kilometre area of land in the northwest corner of Sarnia-Lambton, the City of Sarnia extends southerly along the banks of the St. Clair River and easterly along the southern shore of Lake Huron.
Sarnia is the major urban centre in the region and the largest urban community on Lake Huron. Sarnia, with a population of 97,592 (2021 Census), combines the atmosphere of a small town with the amenities of a major city in a picturesque border setting.
Sarnia is one of Ontario's principal gateways to the United States and is located across the St. Clair River from Port Huron in the state of Michigan, just an hour northeast of Detroit. A modern rail tunnel and twin Blue Water Bridges form an important transportation system for one of the busiest commercial border crossings in the world. It is Ontario’s second busiest US-Canada border crossing (after Windsor-Detroit).
Climate
The climate of Sarnia is considered a mild climate for Canadian standards. Winters are cold and summers are warm to hot and general humid. Lake Huron can create large temperature differences within the city in the spring and early summer and during the winter can create lake-effect snow resulting in white-out conditions and heavy accumulations in the county. Up to date weather conditions can be found online here.
Government
Sarnia City Council consists of nine elected members, including the mayor, four city and county council members and four city council members. The City Councilors serve on the City Council only. Members of council are elected by residents every four years.
