All About Thunder Bay
The City of Thunder Bay is located on Lake Superior. It is the most populous municipality in northwestern Ontario and the second most populous in Northern Ontario (after Greater Sudbury). It is the regional services centre for Northwestern Ontario.
The City gets its name from the immense Thunder Bay at the head of Lake Superior which was known on early 18th century French maps as Baie du Tonnerre (Bay of Thunder). The area is a vibrant community surrounded by natural wonders like Lake Superior which is the world’s largest freshwater lake.
The City of Thunder Bay has a population of 108,843 (2021 census).
Government
The City of Thunder Bay is governed by an elected Council of 13 members who serve for a four-year term: the Mayor, five Councillors at Large, and seven Ward Councillors. Together, they provide municipal representation for all citizens.
