The government-run health plan in Alberta is called Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP). All residents of Alberta and their dependents are eligible to join AHCIP. No eligible resident of Alberta will be denied coverage.

The effective date of your coverage will be determined based on the following:
· If you move to Alberta from within Canada, your coverage begins the first day of the third month following the date you establish permanent residency here.
o For example, if you establish permanent residency in Alberta on July 12, your coverage is effective October 1.
· If you move to Alberta from outside of Canada your coverage begins on your date of arrival in Alberta, once all registration validation requirements are met.
Coverage
Alberta Health and Wellness will cover all your visits to your family doctor as well as any major hospital costs. Click here for a list of covered and excluded services.
How to Apply
Step 1: Complete the application form (pdf). AHCIP forms are also available from an authorized registry agent
Step 2: Gather your supporting documents. When you apply you must provide supporting documents that prove:
· Alberta residency
· Identity
· Legal entitlement to be in Canada
Step 3: Submit the application.
· In person – bring the completed application form and your original documents to an authorized registry agent. There is no charge for this service. Processing time can take up to 4 days and cards will be mailed from the AHCIP office.
· By mail – send your completed application form and photocopies of your supporting documents to the AHCIP office:

Do not send original documents in the mail. Photocopies must include front and back of the document. Processing time can take up to six weeks and cards are mailed directly to you from the AHCIP office.
Fees
There are no health care premiums.
