All About Edmonton

Edmonton is the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta. The city is located on the North Saskatchewan River in the central region of the province, an area with some of the most fertile farmland on the prairies.

The population of Edmonton in 2021 (census) was 1,418,118.

Climate

Edmonton has a semi-arid continental climate with extreme seasonal temperatures—although the city has milder winters than either Regina or Winnipeg, both are located further south in latitude. Edmonton has warm summers and cold winters, with the average daily temperatures ranging from −11.7 °C (10.9 °F) in January to 17.5 °C (63.5 °F) in July. Annually, temperatures exceed 30 °C (86 °F) on an average of four to five days (but can occur often, anytime from late May to early September) and fall below −20 °C (−4.0 °F) on an average of 28 days. For up-to-date weather reports in Edmonton, please visit:  Environment Canada.

Local Economy

Edmonton is the major economic centre for northern and central Alberta and a major centre for the oil and gas industry. Edmonton traditionally has been a hub for Albertan petrochemical industries, earning it the nickname "Oil Capital of Canada" in the 1940s.

Transportation

Edmonton Transit's system covers more than 180 routes, including a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. For more information on their routes, schedules and maps, please visit the Edmonton Transit System website.

Government

Edmonton's City Council is made up of 13 elected representatives including one Mayor and 12 City Councillors. The mayor is elected by all Edmontonians who vote in the civic election. Councillors are elected by voters in the wards they represent. Edmonton has twelve wards and each ward is represented by one Councillor who serves a three-year term.

Education

District school boards administer publicly funded elementary and secondary schools. Working within the framework of Alberta’s Education Act and its regulations, district school boards adapt provincial education policy to local situations. Trustees, as elected members of the board, represent the local community and provide a link between electors and the education system.

Alberta Learning governs both the Public School Board and the Separate (Catholic) School Board, which are run as separate entities.

Children aged 6 to 16 must attend school. Most opt to remain in school to earn their grade 12 diploma. The high school program is based on the credit system; students earn 1 credit for every 25 hours of instruction. To graduate with a diploma, each student must have 100 credits in Compulsory and Optional courses. Most courses are worth between 3 and 5 credits. To broaden their high school program, students are required to have 10 credits from either Career and Technical studies, Physical Education, Fine Arts, or a second language. Also, they are required to have 10 credits from more in-depth studies (i.e., English, Biology, Physics, etc.).

Alberta is a part of the Western Canadian Protocol for Collaboration in Basic Education Kindergarten to Grade 12. This is a project that involves The Northwest Territories, Yukon, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Nunavut. They are working on developing common curriculum formats for math, computer guided learning, languages, and cultures.

The Fraser Institute

Website: http://alberta.compareschoolrankings.org

The Fraser Institute’s ratings and rankings of Alberta schools including Public, Catholic and Independent schools help parents see how the schools in their city or town are doing academically. The Fraser Report is updated annually. Some schools may not be in the report as to different circumstances including being a new school and not having enough information.

Edmonton Public School Board

Edmonton Public Schools is the largest public school district in Edmonton. The district offers a variety of alternative and special needs programs, and many are offered in multiple locations to improve accessibility for students. As a public system, Edmonton Public Schools accepts all students who meet age and residency requirements.

Edmonton Public Schools operates a total of 124 elementary schools, 26 elementary junior high schools, 6 elementary, junior & senior high schools, 27 junior high schools, 13 senior high schools, and 18 other educational programs are offered.

For every neighbourhood in Edmonton, there is a designated school at the elementary, junior and senior high school level. For information on your designated school, use the Find a School Tool to enter your home address to determine the designated schools for your neighbourhood. They do have an open boundary system which means that parents can choose to send their child to virtually any Edmonton Public School, provided it has enough space and the appropriate program.

Edmonton Catholic School Board

In 1888, three nuns from the order of the Faithful Companions of Jesus began teaching 23 Catholic students in the very first Catholic school in Edmonton. The school district has grown from one school to 87 schools with over 33,776 students.

New to the Community

Edmonton Catholic Schools provides a Catholic education to resident students of the district, according to their educational requirements. Non-Catholics and other non-resident students may enrol at Edmonton Catholic Schools given the adequate availability of resources such as space and suitability of program. Contact individual schools for additional registration information.

Registration

A resident student is a baptized Catholic or has at least one parent who is a baptized Catholic. Also, a resident must reside within the corporate limits of the City of Edmonton, be six years of age or older prior to March 1 or 19 years of age or younger as of September 1 of the current school year. In the case of a kindergarten student, is 5 years of age or older prior to March 1 of the current school year. You can register online

Assessment and Education Taxes

The Constitution Acts of Canada and the Alberta School Act stipulate that individuals who are Catholic must direct their education taxes to Catholic separate school boards where they exist. To ensure your property taxes are supporting your Catholic separate school, you must declare your school support as “separate” on your annual property assessment notice and tax bill. If a declaration of school support is not filed by a property owner, the property assessment and tax bills show the school support going to the public school district.

Private Schools in Edmonton

Private schools also provide elementary and secondary education. There are 2 types of private schools in Alberta; Registered and Accredited. Accredited schools that are operated by a non-profit society or corporation may receive government funding. These schools must employ certified teachers and follow the curriculum laid out by Alberta Learning. Also, students attending Accredited schools are able to earn credits towards their grade 12 provincial graduation diploma.

Registered schools are not funded by the province and are not required to follow the same regulations as Accredited schools. Students attending Registered schools are not able to earn credits towards their grade 12 provincial graduation diploma.

All private schools are evaluated regularly by the Education Minister and must meet all provincial health, safety and building standards.

Application Procedures

Application procedures for private schools differ from school to school. An entrance test and interview with the child are generally required. There is not always availability at your private school of choice and your child’s name may be placed on a waiting list for entrance during the school year or subsequent years. It is a good idea to source out private schools well in advance as their registration for school years takes place in approximately December of the prior year and January and February of the same school year.
