  • How to apply for Saskatchewan Health Insurance

All residents of Saskatchewan and their dependents are eligible for Provincial Health coverage.  No eligible resident of Saskatchewan will be denied coverage.

Residents are defined as Canadian citizens or landed immigrants who make their home in Saskatchewan and who ordinarily live in the province for at least five months of each year.

Coverage

Saskatchewan Health Insurance will cover all medically necessary services provided by physicians (in-patient and outpatient services), as well as optometric ocular emergencies, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, immunizations, mental health and treatment for drug and alcohol abuse.  Click this link for the Guide to Health Services in Saskatchewan.

If you are new to Saskatchewan and have come from another part of Canada, you must register for health coverage.  As a general rule, coverage will begin on the first day of the third calendar month following the date you established residency here (this excludes people who are eligible for benefits under other Saskatchewan or federal programs).  For example, if you established residency in Saskatchewan September 27th, Saskatchewan Health would begin to cover you on December 1st.  You will have no interruption in health coverage if you move within Canada, as your home province covers you until your Saskatchewan benefits take effect.

Special Classes of Newcomers

If you are moving to Saskatchewan from outside of Canada, you may be eligible for Saskatchewan health coverage on, or before, the first day of the third month after arriving in Canada.  If you are among one of the groups identified below, you may be eligible for benefits from the day you move to Saskatchewan:

•Permanent residents (landed immigrants)

•People discharged from the Canadian Forces

•Non-immigrants who are in Canada in connection with their trade or profession

•International students

•Returning spouses of Canadian Forces members

•Returning Canadian citizens
