All About Labrador City

Labrador City is a small town in western Labrador/Newfoundland near the Quebec border.  It is known as the Iron Ore Capital of Canada.

Labrador City was founded in the 1960’s to accommodate employees of the Iron Ore Company of Canada.  Iron Ore mining continues to be the primary industry of the town and their slogan is "Built on Industry - Thriving in Nature".

The population of Labrador City is 7,412 (2021 census).

The Labrador City town motto is Kamistiatusset, a Naskapi  word meaning "land of the hard-working people."

Labrador City is only 10kilometres from the Quebec border.

Wabush is the neighbouring town to Labrador City and together the “twin towns” are known as Labrador West. Wabush has a population of 1964 (2021 census) residents.

Living Large

The area medical and educational facilities are excellent. Crime rates are among the lowest in Canada. The exceptional recreational facilities include an 18-hole golf course, an Arts and Culture Centre that regularly features international talents, world class X-country ski trails, alpine skiing, indoor swimming pool, skating rinks, gymnasiums, restaurants, bars and taverns. Both communities boast a high level of volunteerism, sports enthusiasts, musicians, artists and artisans.   You can understand why locals  talk about “living large!”

A High Standard of Living

The cost of living in Labrador West is among the lowest in Canada, yet residents enjoy a high standard of living. Housing is affordable and the region has the advantage of low electrical rates. Groceries are reasonably priced, as well. The region also has the best retail shopping in all of Labrador with many national chains servicing Labrador City, Wabush, Churchill Falls, and other Labrador communities via the Trans Labrador Highway.

Geography & Climate

Labrador City is literally surrounded by forest, as well as picturesque mountains and crystal clear lakes, and this type of landscape spans outward for miles. It is bliss for snowboarders, skiers, hunters, fishers, photographers, hikers, campers, mountain bikers, and increasingly for business people. Characterized by a sweeping geographical region of thin soil and abundant mineral resources, this land is ideal to house the mining industry.

Labrador has been carved through thousands of years of glacial activity. It is rich with pristine and diverse wildlife with 42 native animals. The townsite is surrounded by forest, comprised mostly of evergreen trees, as well as picturesque mountains and crystal clear lakes. And this type of landscape spans outward for miles. It is, and always has been, a paradise for the adventurous and ideal for outdoor activities. It is a dream for snowboarders, skiers, hunters, fishers, photographers, hikers, campers and mountain bikers.

Located 53 degrees north of the equator, the town experiences a climate characterized by long, cold winters and short mild summers. Temperatures range from about -40 degrees Celsius to +25 degrees Celsius with a mean winter temperature of -20 degrees Celsius and a mean summer temperature of 17 degrees Celsius. While the temperatures may seem extreme, the dry climate is well suited to residents who enjoy walking all year round.
